Marriage Licenses

A marriage license is valid for 60 days beginning the day it is issued.  There is a 24-hour waiting period before the marriage ceremony can occur.  To obtain a marriage license, both applicants must bring an original copy or certified copy of their birth certificate.  A second proof of identity from each applicant is required and may include:

  1. Driver’s license;
  2. Passport;
  3. Employment or photo ID; and
  4. Immigration record.

Information regarding all previous divorce decrees must be presented.  The cost of a marriage license is $40.00 payable to the Dover Town Clerk.  After the ceremony, the officiant completes the marriage license and submits the form to the town clerk’s office.  Upon receipt, the town clerk will issue an original marriage registration certificate.

Whenever it is convenient, please call in advance to make an appointment and review required documents.

Certified Copies

When documentation is needed for proof of marriage, or if the marriage registration certificate is lost, missing or unusable, a certified transcript is a legal copy accepted in place of the original.

For a certified transcript of marriage, applicants must complete Form DOH-301 and remit a $10.00 fee payable to the Dover Town Clerk.
